Clematis 'Violacea' (Townsend)
Dark purple flowers. This name appears in Moore & Jackman's 1872 edition.
According to Moore and Jackman's footnote, this form was exhibited before the Royal Botanic Society in July 1864 and was awarded a first-class certificate. By 1872 when the first edition of their book was published the cultivar appeared "to have passed out of cultivation, or in some way or other to have disappeared."
